The Navarro Girl

First girl showed it to me,
puzzled me, of course,

that treasure like the lost empire
of the legendary Ozymandias,

what does that have to do
with the ancient world which forsakes me now,

meanings did not have meanings then,
music was not music,

words were kids’ play.
Her smile so marvelous

as we looked at each other with wild surmise,
silent under the tarpaulin of a cotton-filled trailer.

for the life of me I can not
remember her first name now,
fifty years later.
