Chicano Poet

Alma Villanueva

The winter storms bash Redondo Beach,
leaving its corners rounded,
restaurants and Malibu beach houses
fall into the Pacific.
I worry about Alma Villanueva,
I don’t know how close
to the surf she lives.
We can’t afford to lose
too many chicana poets.
Especially not the ones
that put their behinds
on the cover of their books.
I’m sure the storm
may have grounded
the Royal Chicano Airforce,
but I hear Jose Montoya
has recently acquired
all-weather jet fighters
with sensors so sensitive that they
can pick out a poetess among poets,
even if she’s wearing the pants!
