Second Life

If my friends had a second life
to resume the one cut short,

Cecilio would concentrate
on his poetry, not ours.

No, you got it all wrong!

That would be a good thing.

Max would have a chance
to break out from his prose,

the Black Hat Poet scour
the barrios far and wide,

Lalo watch his great-grandchildren grow up.
No ugly visions of Aztlan

would have happened.
We would not let it.

Not back down like so many brothers
and sisters are willing to do today.

If you get a chance, check out this place.

Peter Camejo passed away on Sat Sept 14, 2008. He had been a militant all his life. Partook in the Free Speech Movement at Berkeley, was into third party politics (Green Party). I met Peter in 1969 at the Chicano Youth conference organized by Corky Gonzales. It was the first national Chicano youth gathering. That was the first and last time I had any kind of conversation with Peter. I found him to be a good and kind person. He passed away from Lymphoma. This concerns me, because many of the particpants of the 60's civil rights movement have passed away from different types of cancers. Graciela Soto, Tino Esparza, Cecilio, Antonio Burciaga, Max Martinez, etc. And the unforgettable Stokely Carmichael aka Kwame Toure also died from cancer. What were we sprayed with? If they could infect with cancer they also have the cure.

Very interesting comment,Esmeralda.Although you have to remove Max from that list because he died from the consequences of a stroke.Still, you can add Ricardo Sanchez to that list.
